Values are typically intangibles like wealth, love, creativity, and freedom. They are qualities that you possess or want to possess that will help you achieve your goals and create success. Understanding your values is important because they drive the decisions that we make in life which ultimately lead to our results and our happiness.
Are you getting the results that you want right now? If not, a big part of it is probably because you do not understand your values. Not understanding your values will cause you to make decisions that are more in line with another person’s values. On the other hand, understanding your values will enable you to make decisions that are fulfilling, rewarding, and right for YOU.
Determine What Your Values Are
A great way to determine what your values are is to brainstorm and write them down. What’s important to you? Is it love? Is it wealth? Start creating a list of 50 values that are important to you, whether you believe you have them now or want to have them. Some ideas are courage, making a difference, attractiveness… anything you can think of. Once you have at least 50, cut the list to 24. These 24 should be more important to you than the others. From there, cut the list even further to 6 values. Really take your time and think about what is most important to you. These 6 should be ones you cannot do without to realize your full potential. These are your top values.
Keep Your Values With You
Having these values at the forefront of your mind helps you make decisions and set priorities that are best for you. Keep them in your wallet, hang them on the bathroom mirror, keep them on your desk. Keep a conscious awareness of your values every day.
Understanding your values is key to making the best decisions that will ultimately lead to your happiness and success. Your values influence your thoughts, feelings, and actions, which become your results. Make your values count.
