I’m not immune to feeling down and out on myself. Especially when I’m getting ready to embark on something new. I always question myself, “Am I good enough to do this?” Luckily, this doesn’t last too long. When I start feeling inadequate, I quickly remember these six things. If you feel you aren’t good enough, you should remember the same.
When You Compare Yourself, Remember It’s Usually Apples To Oranges
Comparing yourself to others is really harmful to your confidence and self-esteem. It’s one thing to aim for the same accomplishments others may have, but another to try to “be” the same as others. When we do fall into this trap, we never compare equally either. We have a tendency to compare our worst, with someone’s best. Trust me, the other person you are comparing yourself to has their own issues. They probably compare as well. They could very well look at you and want what you have. So the next time you feel you aren’t good enough compared to someone else, remember it’s not apples to apples. It’s apples to oranges.
Remember Your Inner Critic Is A Liar
The voice in your head is a powerful one. You have to look at it as a separate entity. It’s a separate being living in your head whose sole purpose is to keep you in your comfort zone. When you feel you aren’t good enough, you never take any chances. You are afraid to fail. Remember that your inner critic is a liar. You ARE good enough. Things WILL work out for you. You CAN succeed. Don’t listen to that negative voice.
Remember You Have Amazing Strengths And Qualities
Sometimes it’s hard to remember that we have great qualities. As a matter of fact, I have a whole lesson around this subject in my Confidence & Self-Esteem Jump Start Course. It may not feel like it, but you do have some great qualities and strengths. Take some time right now to write down all of your strengths. Don’t think too hard. It can be as simple as getting up on time. Write it down. Make a list. Hang that list up and look at it every day. When you feel you aren’t good enough, remember you have some amazing strengths and qualities that you offer the world.
Remember Baby Steps Matter
Don’t look at how or where you are now and compare it to where you think you should be. Instead just focus on being a little bit better tomorrow. Baby steps matter. Aim for progress, not perfection.
Remember You Were Successful Before
I don’t care who you are or what you are struggling with right now, in the past you succeeded. You overcame something. The fact that you are here right now means that you have survived your worst days. I love the quote below:
It’s true, isn’t it? When you feel you aren’t good enough, remember you were successful before. Here’s a tip, every night before bed, write your day’s successes in a journal. As I mentioned before, simple things are fine. Did you get to bed on time? Success! Did you finish a project at work? Success. Did your kids survive another day? Success! Look at your journal to remind yourself of how successful you were in the past.
Remember Everything Is Coming Together
The thing about life is that nothing is smooth sailing. We have highs and lows. All of us do. You may be in a rut right now, but it is for a reason. When you finally get to where you want to be, you’ll appreciate it more. It’s all part of the process. Just remember that. This is only one season. There are better seasons ahead.
The next time you feel inadequate and not good enough, do what I do and remember these six things. You are unique, successful, and have many strengths. You just have to remember that.
