All of us are plagued with tough times. No one is immune. Life is never easy right? We have our peaks and we have our valleys. Sometimes it seems like we are stuck in that valley forever. Some of you have set up camp in the valley. Are you one of them? If so, or life just sucks at the moment, there are some things you can do to stay optimistic.
Surround Yourself With Positive People
If you want to stay optimistic, surround yourself with optimistic people. Their positive energy will rub off on you. When you surround yourself with people who are just as pessimistic as you are right now, you’ll stay in that valley longer. Think of a few people in your life that are positive. Aim to spend more time with them. It can be as simple as going out to grab a coffee with an old friend. Or you can be bolder and join a meetup group whose sole purpose is to have fun and enjoy each others’ company.
Stop Incessantly Talking About Your Troubles
Negative energy attracts negative energy. When you incessantly complain or talk about your troubles, whether that be direct to someone or indirectly on social media, you are just setting yourself for an even suckier life. How many people do you know right now who consistently post negative information on social media? I know quite a few. They never seem to be happy. Life sucks for them all the time. If they were to start posting more optimistic posts, they would become more optimistic, and great things will happen for them. So if life sucks for you right now, it’s okay to feel down and to get support if you need it. Just try not to incessantly talk about it.
Visualize A Better Life
Visualization is a powerful tool to improve your optimism. Think about how you would like your life to be. Are you married? Do you have kids? Are you working in your dream job? Are you in the greatest shape of your life? Close your eyes each night before bed and visualize your perfect life. This does 3 things. First, it will trigger positive emotions which will improve your optimism. It will also motivate you to take action. Seeing your perfect life in your mind will make you more determined to live this life. Finally, it will activate the law of attraction. Things will start happening in your life that will make your visualizations a reality. Be consistent, and visualize with as much emotion as you can. See it, and feel the positive emotions that come with your perfect life.
Focus On Something Positive
When I went through my divorce, my life sucked. I was worried about so many things. Would I be alone forever? Would my relationship with my kids suffer? Can I afford a lawyer? I lost a lot of sleep, and stress aged me quite a bit during this time. I was a wreck and I was pessimistic about everything. It wasn’t until I started focusing on my kids that I was able to get my life back on track. Yes, it was still hard, but knowing that I would always have my kids helped me to stay optimistic about my future. What do you have in your life that you can focus on to stay optimistic when life gets you down? It can be someone in your life, it can be a memory, it can be anything that makes you feel happy. Try to focus on whatever it is every day.
Get Some Perspective
If you want to be more optimistic and feel better about yourself instantly, volunteer at a homeless shelter or help the less fortunate in some way. Our problems are big to us, and that’s okay, but sometimes when you get a little perspective it will help you be more appreciative of the things that ARE going for you. There are people right now who can’t afford a meal let alone pay for a place to live. Keep this in mind. Your life may suck right now, but at least you have the resources and the means to read this article. 1.2 billion others don’t even have electricity.
Life sucks for us all at times, but there are ways for you to stay optimistic. Try these simple tips, and you’ll start seeing things a bit more positively.
